A painting week at Dalvaro Art with Keith Hornblower in 2019

Course title:

Watercolours in April in Valencia

Arrival day; Wednesday April 17th 2019

Departure day Wednesday April 24th 2019

This workshop includes a seven night stay.

An ideal exclusive art workshop for the single traveller who may feel lost in a larger group.

This painting holiday is organised by Dalvaro Art in conjunction with the painting tutor Keith Hornblower.

This art workshop is strictly limited to just 5 painters.

Non-painting partners are welcome.

The painting holiday venue is the home of Loli and Harold. The villa “Las Orquideas” overlooks the rural pueblo of Benigànim and the Valle D’Albaida, Valencia, Spain. This area of rural Spain set amidst the orange and olive groves is also an area of vineyards and fine wines. Being almost central between the main airports of Alicante and Valencia it is well situated for visits to many of the ancient Moorish towns, both inland and on the coast, well away from the touristic areas usually associated with the Costa Brava, making for ideal locations for any artist.

‘Las Orquideas’ is a colonial style, white villa with magnificent views across the valley to the mountain range of Benicadell, the sierra de Marriola and several towns in the Valle D’Albaida.

The very well-appointed villa’s accommodation comprises two twin and two double bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. With a further three twin bedrooms and two double bedrooms, all private and en suite, in a separate annex. An enclosed naiya, which includes a self-service breakfast/snack bar area, plus an outside summer kitchen, plus, of course, many outside dining areas.

Breakfasts, lunches and evening meals, with drinks, are all included within the cost of this painting holiday.

The well-planned and beautifully landscaped gardens surround the villa and cover an area of 5000 square metres or just over 1 acre and offer many shaded and reflective places to sit, paint, read or just relax and take in the tranquil surroundings. For the more athletic, there is the opportunity to play tennis or petanque (boules) as well as the use of the cascade swimming pool.

The villa is well situated for walking, hiking, cycling, photography etc. particularly for any non-painting partners.

Keith Hornblower

Keith Hornblower has been an Architectural Illustrator for 30 years and is a Fellow of the Society of Architectural Illustration, but he is also a passionate painter in watercolour, entirely self-taught.

Because of his deep understanding of buildings and the principles of perspective, he paints them frequently, with a freedom not allowed in his illustration work and he is keen to pass on this knowledge to his students. But subject matter is not restricted to street scenes and he is equally at home painting landscapes or flowers, always with an infectious freedom and passion.

Students are often intimidated by watercolour and the fear of white paper; Keith manages to dispel this fear and inspires his students to let loose, have fun and produce great paintings. Ultimately, it’s not about the tutor, but all about what he can bring out of the students.

Course Outline

Keith says:

“I will show you how to reduce a scene to its essentials, so that anything can be painted relatively simply and spontaneously. Tonal values and light are everything; if the values are right, we can have a lot of fun with the colours! Mistakes are not a big deal; that’s how we learn and the more we paint and the more mistakes we make, the better we become as painters.

Mistakes are not only good they are essential; they mean we are willing to try something different.”
