A watercolour painting week with Arnold Lowrey in 2017

Course title:

Watercolour Techniques for all levels

Arrival day; Sunday June 4th

Departure day Saturday June 10th

This painting holiday is organised by Dalvaro Art in conjunction with the painting tutor Arnold Lowrey.

The painting holiday venue is the home of Loli and Harold. The villa “Las Orquideas” overlooks the rural pueblo of Benigànim and the Valle D’Albaida, Valencia, Spain. This area of rural Spain set amidst the orange and olive groves is also an area of vineyards and fine wines. Being almost central between the main airports of Alicante and Valencia it is well situated for visits to many of the ancient Moorish towns, both inland and on the coast, well away from the touristic areas usually associated with the Costa Brava, making for ideal locations for any artist.

‘Las Orquideas’ is a colonial style, white villa with magnificent views across the valley to the mountain range of Benicadell, the sierra de Marriola and several towns in the Valle D’Albaida.

The very well-appointed villa’s accommodation comprises two twin and two double bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. With a further three twin bedrooms and two double bedrooms, all private and en suite, in a separate annex. An enclosed naiya, which includes a self-service breakfast/snack bar area, plus an outside summer kitchen, plus, of course, many outside dining areas.

Breakfasts, lunches and evening meals, with drinks, are all included within the cost of this painting holiday.

The well-planned and beautifully landscaped gardens surround the villa and cover an area of 5000 square metres or just over 1 acre and offer many shaded and reflective places to sit, paint, read or just relax and take in the tranquil surroundings. For the more athletic, there is the opportunity to play tennis or petanque (boules) as well as the use of the cascade swimming pool.

The villa is well situated for walking, hiking, cycling, photography etc. particularly for any non-painting partners.

Arnold Lowrey

Arnold Lowrey has been painting for over 40 years. He paints in watercolours, oils, pastels and acrylics and over the last 20 years he has tutored thousands of painting sessions. He regularly demonstrates for Art Societies and runs workshops in all media. He has taught in Workshops in UK, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, and America and also on the cruise ships.  All his demonstrations are accompanied by a strong sense of humour and clear explanations. Four books on painting techniques have been published with translations in several languages and over 20 DVDs have been filmed. His latest DVD, “Painting Flowers in Watercolour” is now out. He can be seen regularly on the Painting and Drawing Channel on Sky TV and he recently had an article on flowers in watercolour published in the prestigious magazine “The Art of Watercolour”. He is self taught, and has advanced by studying the techniques of the artists he most admires e.g. William “Skip” Lawrence, John Yardley, Joseph Zbukvic, Robert Wade, Alvaro Castignet etc. Artists from the past who have also influenced his painting direction are Turner, John Singer Sargent, Zorolla and Van Gogh, etc. He has exhibited in The Royal Institute of Watercolours at the mall galleries, London.  Colour and light together with good composition and design are important to him. He likes to paint quickly on adrenaline before his attention span ends. Arnold lives in Cardiff, Wales UK where he regularly holds exhibitions of his paintings. A member of the South Wales Art Society for over 40 years, he has recently been honoured with the position of Vice President.  Arnold has been a regular visitor to Dalvaro Art for  the last four years, always having two painting weeks, of which is his first for this year.

On this holiday we will use the trips out as precursors to finalising the work in the studio or the grounds of Las Orquideas. This way Arnold allows the free flowing imagination of the student take over without being too regimented with the detail in view as seen on location.
